The First Sunday of Advent in the United Kingdom is the beginning of quite a few celebrations in the UK

Advent Sunday is the start of the Christmas season, and the beginning of the church year. In fact, The First Sunday of Advent is the closest Sunday to another important day called, St Andrew's Day. Advent Sunday is a time of celebration.

Advent Sunday brings out the best in people. The First Sunday in Advent is the day that most churches collect money for children's organizations, particularly, the Children's Home Society. This special children's organization aids in the support of children who face abuse, neglect, violence and poverty. During the first Advent Sunday churches host a special service called Christingle, where children are given a Christingle to carry. Advent Sunday is also a time to reflect on the past, present and future.

The majority of people in town, hang decorations in their place of business, and in their homes on the First Sunday of Advent. The lights and decorations are hung on, or just before the start of Advent Sunday, or shortly after. These festival lights are seen in shopping centers, on Christmas trees and in other places throughout the town.

Some people spread the joy around, by sending Christmas cards to their loved ones far and near, before the First Sunday of Advent. Other people prepare a special dish or pudding or bake deserts and cakes on the First Sunday of Advent. Although, this holiday is not a bank holiday in the UK, it is one of the busiest days of the season, as people make plans to celebrate the First Sunday of Advent.

Four candles, twigs and leaves are formed around a wreath, and one candle is lit on the first, second, third and fourth Sunday. However, most people choose to light the candles throughout the entire holiday season. All and all, Advent season normally lasts from 22 to 28 days, and ends on Christmas Day.
